Social Impact Exchange, Day 1

June 18, 2010

Day one at SEI10, held at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan, was attended by close to 400 funders, nonprofits, philanthropy advisers, and others. Robert Steel, former president and CEO of Wachovia Corporation and chairman of the Aspen Institute, and Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, delivered keynote addresses. Judith Rodin, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, also spoke.
The day's main event was the investment fair, a collaborative funding venue for scaling nonprofits. Seven organizations with demonstrated impact and readiness to scale presented their growth plans. Following the presentations, the funders in the audience convened a closed-door meeting to discuss the nonprofits and sign up for teams to review the nonprofits for growth funding.
The seven nonprofits that presented were:
Communities in Schools
Experience Corps
jumpstart
Root Capital
Uncommon Schools
Ways to Work
YouthBuild USA
The presentations were truly inspiring. Each of the seven organizations is doing good work and doing it well, and each has the potential to grow and do good for many people.
