Abstract:
The comprehensive high school model and supporting philosophy is an institutionalized and entrenched element of the American educational system, and converting these schools to multiple smaller learning communities is proving to be a difficult task. In fact, even when educators have been successful at implementing SLCs, recent research has shown that the educational benefits generally associated with smaller schools are not clear. While researchers continue to study effects of small schools and SLCs on student outcomes, in this paper we are focusing on what we have learned about the actual process of converting high schools to SLCs.
